New Berth and Cold Store, Port of Sheerness, Kent

  Client: The Mersey Docks and
Harbour Company

Contractor:

Christiani and Nielsen Limited
  Value: £35m
Date: October 1997 to December 1998

This project was a 20 year joint venture partnership with importers Capespan and Fresh Fruit Services, representing a number of UK distributors.  The scheme comprised a 160m long deep water berth, and a 29,000m² cold store building on a piled wharf structure.  The works were completed under a 15 month programme.

TGP was appointed by the Employer as Planning Supervisor for the design and construct contract.  Co-ordination was required between five primary design consultants covering the disciplines of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Building Structure, Building Services and Refrigeration and a multiplicity of design and supply sub-contractors.  The Health and Safety Plan was progressed from the Tender stage through design development of the various elements concurrently with site construction, and the role required an ongoing liaison process with the contractor's design team.  Fire and Services were particularly important issues to be considered.
