The pontoon was designed to provide access and
support to an 85m long connecting bridge situated on the south
bank of the Thames. The £2m jetty acted as a vital
transport link to the Millennium Dome, accommodating an estimated
one million riverboat passengers visiting the Millennium
Experience. The pontoon was 90m long and was constructed
using an innovative technique utilising large diameter circular
steel hollow sections weighing 450 tonnes. The steel tubes
were designed to be capable of providing the required buoyancy
whilst resisting a complex series of load combinations resulting
from dead, live and wave loading. The design stage was
carried out using a fast track approach in order to ensure that
the construction stage was completed to the tight deadline
specified.
