A38 Marsh Mills Interchange, Plymouth

  Client: Highways Agency

Contractor:

Hochtief AG

  Value: £12.25m
  Date: May 1994 - February 1996

During the replacement of two multi-span viaducts at this busy interchange, the opportunity was taken to widen and extend existing slip roads, improve surface water drainage and signing, and to provide new cycle tracks and pedestrian footpaths.

TGP carried out the detailed design of all the works including liaison with local authorities, statutory bodies, and the general public. The site works were carried out utilising Quality Assurance procedures with TGP certifying all work undertaken by the contractor.

At the north western end of the contract the ailing carriageway was enhanced and traffic management measures designed for joining / exiting traffic and monitoring cameras.

The scheme design was highly praised in the press and on national television.  It won an AA National Motoring Award in 1996 for its innovative features, which enabled traffic congestion to be minimised.
