Falkirk Wheel Boat Lift, Falkirk, Scotland

  Client: British Waterways

Contractor:

Butterley Engineering /
Morrison Construction
  Value: £78 million
  Date: Summer 2000 – Autumn 2001

The iconic, multi-award winning Falkirk Wheel is a landmark structure forming the centrepiece of the £78 million Millennium Canal Link between Edinburgh and Glasgow.  It represents a unique replacement of a 19th Century flight of locks, enabling boats to be lifted over the 25m height difference between the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals.

TGP was retained by main steelwork contractor Butterley Engineering to design the 1300T of structural steelwork forming the gondola pools, rotating arms and axle.  Boats entering a gondola at one level are rotated round the axle to exit at the second level, a process lasting fifteen minutes. The boat lift is one of the world’s largest working sculptures, a symbol of the urban regeneration it is intended to stimulate.
