An incrementally launched concrete box girder multi-span viaduct.  Due to the sensitive nature of the area, the design, in particular the superstructure profile was subject to the approval of the Fine Arts Commission.

The contract was awarded after a lengthy Design and Construction competition.  The efficient design is attributed to close liaison between designer and contractor from the outset.

The bridge is a 22 span viaduct, 890m long, with typical spans of 43.5m, constructed from an in situ prestressed concrete box supported on two 2.2m diameter tubular steel piles and a reinforced concrete frame pier at each support position.  The deck was cast in 21.75m long sections with one cast taking place every two weeks, with it and the previously cast sections being launched forward on the weekly cycle.  The final launch weighed some 15,000 tonnes.  The deck was cast under cover so that high quality construction could be completed throughout the winter in factory conditions.  The foundation and deck programmes were overlapped so that launching of the deck commenced before all piers had been completed.

The structure won two prestigious awards recognising the innovative methods of design and construction.
