Six RC piers extending up to 35m above
water level were strengthened by wrapping up to seven layers of
carbon fibre fabric around the upper 1.8m and impregnating
it with epoxy resin. The resulting CFRP composite was designed to
resist bursting forces beneath the bearings in conjunction with
pre-tensioned steel bars. Prior to the strengthening works being
carried out, a migrating corrosion inhibitor was applied to the
surface of the concrete.
