A major 5.5km bypass incorporating three new
bridges and three major culverts. At Arthingworth Road, a new
overbridge provides a gateway to the Jordan valley. In addition,
two single span bridges, of identical form, cross the River Ise
and the London to Leicester Railway line on the northern section
of the road.
Within this environmentally sensitive area, circular culverts
cross watercourses at the River Jordan and the A14 interchange,
and an undertrack crossing of the railway near the market town of
Desborough was required to drain the northern part of the new
carriageway. To avoid unsightly deep cuttings, the new alignment
was designed to follow the profile of the existing terrain. Across
the valleys of the River Ise and the smaller River Jordan, new
embankments up to 14 metres high were constructed.
The three interchanges at the A14, Braybrooke Road and existing A6
junctions are now illuminated and extensive measures were used to
enhance the environment of the people and wildlife influenced by
the scheme. Great crested newts, badgers, bats and ground nesting
birds were accommodated and the demands of the Environment Agency
necessitated the provision of a considerable number of detention
ponds and vegetative treatment areas designed by Tony Gee to reduce
surface run-off and maintain water quality.
Tony Gee prepared material for public exhibitions and meetings in both
Rothwell and Desborough as part of the public liaison process.
