The first stage of the cast iron fascia replacement scheme at Westminster Bridge has been successfully completed by contractor Interserve and designers Tony Gee and Partners.
The removal of the 14 existing cast iron self supporting fascia arches, which date back to 1862, is the second of three phases in the complete renovation of Westminster Bridge, being undertaken by Transport for London as part of their five year investment
programme. The recognisable decorative spandrels will be refurbished and incorporated into new cast iron fascias, preserving the historic face of the bridge.
Over the next few weeks, innovative temporary works solutions designed by Tony Gee will facilitate the removal and replacement of the fascias without disruption to bridge traffic.
Each fascia is cut and lifted from the bridge by a 110t capacity crane using Interserves Tilman barge.
Once free, the fascia is lowered onto a second barge and secured for transit before being taken away for restoration.
