Tony Gee has been appointed alongside Gifford
by Network Rail to carry out a broad geotechnical and
structural analysis of the effect that building the 310
metre high Tower, known as the 'Shard of Glass,'
will have on the Victorian vaults and foundations beneath
London Bridge Station.
Demolition of the 24-storey Southwark Towers next to the
station has already started in preparation for the
construction of what will be the UK's tallest building. The
building plans for the new tower include a deep basement
underpinning the structure.
Tony Gee specialists will work alongside Gifford's structural and
geotechnical analysis teams and in cooperation with the
design engineers working on the 'Shard of Glass,'
to assess the potential impact of the project on the
station's foundations. Ground levels vary underneath London
Bridge and the adjacent bus station, with much of the
support for the station provided by a network of Victorian
masonry vaults. Some of these are empty while others house
businesses including the London Dungeons attraction.
The
assessment undertaken by Tony Gee and Gifford will continue throughout
the course of construction of the tower and of other
developments planned in the immediate area.
