Rugeley Underbridges win ICE Award for Tony Gee

May 2007

Tony Gee's record in winning major engineering awards has been extended with a win at the ICE West Midlands Annual Awards.

Design and build team Birse Rail and Tony Gee picked up the prestigious Construction Award for the challenging slide of two rail underbridges, forming part of the three phase, £22m Rugeley Eastern Bypass scheme. The team accepted the award alongside main client Staffordshire County Council.

Key to the 9m second phase of the scheme, the two underbridges were initially constructed off-line adjacent to the railway, in areas less susceptible to flooding from the nearby River Trent. The structures were each slid as single units, following excavation of up to 20,000m of embankment fill. The bridges presented differing structural forms, however, the design was prepared to duplicate temporary work components and maximise replication of installation methods.

Andrew Kenchington, Tony Gee's Project Engineer said, "The scheme presented a multitude of challenges, all met by our continuing involvement from the very beginning of feasibility to successful completion of the project."

The overall scheme is scheduled to open at the end of this year.

Tony Gee's Project Director Nigel Steele explains the scheme to ICE President Professor Quentin Leiper.
