TGP and Volker Stevin unlock potential of Olympic Rivers

March 2007

British Waterways has awarded a design and build contract to Volker Stevin for a new lock and water control structure south of London’s Olympic Park.  The structure is a key element in the sustainable regeneration of the waterways in the Lower Lea Valley, maximising their use for transport, habitat improvement and public access.

Twin fish belly water control structures on Prescott Channel and Three Mills River will control the rivers upstream at a navigable depth, exclude tidal influx and regulate fluvial flood events.  A 62m lock will create access for pairs of 350t barges into the area and so help to take thousands of lorry journeys off local roads during the construction of the Olympic Park alone.

TGP is lead designer for the D&B scheme with a supporting design team of Bennett Associates for gate and control systems design, Clague Architects and Weetwood Environmental Engineering for hydraulic and hydrological input.

Tidal exclusion is to be achieved by December 2007, and completion in mid-2008 for this key element of East London's regeneration infrastructure.
