A
remediation scheme to stabilise ancient mine workings on a stretch
of railway line in
Cornwall
received a High Commendation at the prestigious ICE South West
Region Merit Awards in
Bath
last week.
A
critical section of the line ran over the old mine workings at
Dowgas. Tony Gee and
Partners (TGP) was appointed initially by Network Rail to examine
the feasibility and relative risks of various options for
stabilising the new double track alignment over the mine.
Following
site investigation, the favoured option was to install heavily
reinforced concrete slab below the ballast which is capable of
supporting the worst credible subsidence condition.
Tony Gee and Partners is proud to be part of the team that received
the merit award.
Alfred
McAlpine, working under the GWESPA alliance, continued TPG’s appointment for the detailed design. This
included temporary and permanent track alignment to tie into the
overall redoubling scheme enabling work to be switched from one
track alignment to the other under a tight programme using only
short possessions.
